rgtadmin <![CDATA[So, where ARE these events, and how can I get to my event in the Hotel?]]> /?p=3803 2018-01-06T23:29:25Z 2017-11-15T08:17:22Z The Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West Hotel, in Plymouth MN, is the Host of the 5th Annual Renegade Open Gaming Event. It boasts 35 meeting rooms, with 38,000 square feet of meeting space. It can be daunting to navigate, and we fully recommend that you explore what this amazing hotel has to offer you as a guest.

Our Events will be held in 13 different areas of the Hotel, and on all three floors. This guide will help you find your way. You may also Use this Link to help you locate your Event Space.

THE MAIN FLOOR

The Main Floor is where you may check into the Hotel for the Night, as well as eat dinner in the restaurant, enjoy a cocktail, or use the Business Center. Straight ahead as you walk in, you will see the Front Desk.

If you take a left, you may take the stairs up to the Second Floor, below. Walking down the hall, you will find the Regency Ballroom, where on Friday Horus Heresy, 40k Combat Patrol, and 40k Knights Joust will be held. On Saturday and Sunday, the 40k Main Event will be here as well. Moving on, you will find Boardroom 2, where we have Painting Classes and Open Hobby/Gaming setup.

Our Vendor Hall will be in Conference Room B. Here we will have Muse on MinisTower Games, Dreamer’s Vault, Midwest Miniatures Guy, Applied Perspective, and Badger Airbrush. Please stop by as often as you can! It’s not the largest, but we plan to work on that for next year.

Conference Room C will be our 40k Main Event Overflow area. The Top Tables will be in this room.

In the Kiosk Area, there will be Snacks and beverages available Friday – Sunday, for those that are hungry before, after, and during their games. You can also find Fantasy Flight demoing their new tabletop game, Star Wars: Legion on Friday from 02:00p – 08:00p FRI 11/17 and 10:00p – 06:00p SAT 11/18

Near the Kiosk are Conference Rooms D and E. In Conference Room D, you can find exciting games based on our history. On Saturday is Bolt Action, a WWII based game, and on Sunday is Saga, which is based on Vikings and the various Gaul Tribes of Europe.

In the other direction from the Front Desk, you will find the Creekside Lounge. The Lounge features a relaxing, congenial atmosphere including music, TV, and a fireplace. It is the perfect place to meet friends and colleagues after work or a night on the town. Full Creekside menu service until 10:00 pm and selected items until 11:00 pm most evenings.

Past the Creekside Lounge, you will walk down a long corridor. This will lead you to the Europa Room, which offers a buffet on Sundays. Just passed that is the Copenhagen Room, which is where Kings of War players will be having their event. At least they are near a bar!

THE SECOND FLOOR

From the Front Desk, you will take some stairs up. This will take you through a narrow open room known as the Mezzanine. This is an excellent location to get some peace and quiet, but on Saturday, from 8pm to 12 Midnight, we will be offering a space for Bitz Trading. This is open to all game systems, so come see what people have to offer! You never know what you might find.

The only event held on the Second Floor will be Warmachine and Hordes, on all three days, Friday/Saturday/Sunday. It will be in the largest room available on that floor, Studio 2. The best way to reach this room is to go through the Kiosk Area, and take the stairs up. It will take you right to the room.

THE GROUND FLOOR

The last area to explore is the Ground Floor of the Hotel. This will take you towards the other location of a cluster of games this weekend. Take a right passed the Front Desk, and then take a left. You will see a set of stairs going down, and it leads directly to the Scandinavian Ballroom.

Here you can find the following events: Star Wars: X-Wing (FRI), Star Wars: Armada (SAT/SUN), Star Wars: Imperial Assault (SUN), Batman Miniatures Game (SAT/SUN), Malifaux (SAT), and our other Main Event, Age of Sigmar (SAT/SUN)

We are set up for an amazing weekend, and we appreciate you sharing it with us.

rgtadmin <![CDATA[Why play in Combat Patrol?]]> /?p=3751 2018-01-06T23:29:25Z 2017-11-07T20:23:09Z Warhammer 40k is a game which quite often takes players over 3 hours to complete a single match. Even time restricted tournament play is limited to 2.5 hours. But what if you have that itch to play a game of Warhammer and you’re pressed for time. Can Warhammer 40k be scaled down to just an hour?

The answer is yes, and the variant is called Combat Patrol. Combat Patrol is a 400 point match of Warhammer played on a 48” x 48” play surface, and uses the same ruleset as standard Warhammer 40k, with a few differences. Rather than pitting whole armies against each other, Combat Patrol represents smaller, more focused groups of soldiers in small skirmishes.

The result has been a fast paced game where players run small patrols that makes for a quicker and more casual game than core Warhammer 40k. It allows players to complete a game within an hour, and play many games in the time it would take for a single game of a 2,000 point game of Warhammer 40k.

When creating the Combat Patrol rules, the Renegade staff had to have a vision for what we wanted the game to be. Combat Patrol has existed for many years, in particular at Adepticon. In past versions of Combat Patrol, players were limited to 1 HQ, 3 troops, 1 Fast Attack, 1 Heavy and 1 Elites, with 1 flex unit that could be a troop, FA, Heavy or Elite. Monstrous creatures were not allowed. Models with more than 2 wounds that were not troops were not allowed. Vehicles could not have a combined armor rating of more than 33. These rules worked well for 7th edition and earlier, however, with 8th edition, changes had to be made.

The goal of the Renegade Open was to make an 8th edition Combat Patrol that was balanced and fit the theme of a small skirmish. The first decision was to allow HQs or not. With the power level and roles that HQ units provide in 8th edition, and the vision we had for Combat Patrol, it was decided that HQs should not be allowed. The idea of an army commander, and the aura bonuses provided by most HQs did not fit the vision, or balance of Combat Patrol. Lords of war were an obvious exclusion for the same reasons. It was also decided that flyers did not fit these criteria.

The next challenge was to determine how strong single models could be. The old system simply restricted wounds, then restricted armor facings. However, 8th got rid of armor facings and replaced hull points with wounds and higher toughness. Keeping the same restrictions on wounds would eliminate all vehicles, and we didn’t want that. Light dedicated transports were always allowed, and we wanted that to continue. But we didn’t want to allow some of the tougher midrange units like Dreadnaughts, Kastelan Robots and Carnifexes.

So, we came up with a toughness + wounds restriction and limited models to having a combined total of those two values of 12 or less. This allows for light walkers such as sentinels, which have always been allowed, but kept out the tougher ones. We then decided that dedicated transports specifically could go up to 17.

Finally, we decided that Combat Patrol should use one specific detachment. Though 8th edition already has the patrol detachment, it didn’t fit the restrictions that Combat Patrol was supposed to have. So we made a specific combat Patrol detachment and gave it no bonus command points. Players will have the base 3 for having a battleforged army.

After much playtesting of this ruleset, we decided we were pretty happy with the system. It’s a lot of fun and we greatly recommend 40k players give it a try. It’s a great system for teaching new players how to play. We’re very excited for the Combat Patrol tournament on Friday November 17th. There’s still plenty of room, so sign up now.

–Emperor Palpatine, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Shouts and screams echo around you—the din of pitched battle. The air smells acrid from blaster fire as lasers hiss past your squad. A scout trooper roars past on a 74-Z speeder bike, weaving between trees and firing at someone you can’t quite see through the underbrush. You raise your blaster and fire in the same direction, hoping to avoid any shrapnel. Ahead, you see Darth Vader, towering over a group of fallen Rebels strewn across the forest floor. He flicks his lightsaber forward, and your platoon charges…

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Star Wars™: Legion, a new miniatures game of infantry battles that invites you to join iconic heroes and villains, lead your troopers into battle, and battle for the fate of the Star Wars galaxy. With Star Wars: Legion, you can build and paint a unique army of miniatures. You can command your troops in battle and devise masterful tactics. And you can conquer your opponent’s army to bring victory to the light side or the dark side!

With thirty-three unpainted and easily assembled miniatures, and all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and terrain that you need for battle, the Star Wars: Legion Core Set is the perfect way to bring Star Wars battles to your tabletop.

If you’re here with us at the Renegade Open in Plymouth, MN head to our table in the Kiosk area of the Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West Hotel to get your first taste of Star Wars: Legion.
